My name is Maria Kier Bang, I was born in '81 and I live in Esbjerg. Through ceramics and painting, I try to honestly and objectively convey vulnerability and the density of a troubled mind. About emotions and mental states in a given moment, with intricate shapes and broken colours. 

When I was in my early twenties, my grandmother came rushing in with a canvas, some sad brushes, a small bottle of linseed oil and a pack of Marie's oil colors. My grandmother thought I should paint "it" out, and I was unsure of what "it" was she was talking about. A few years later, "it" hit me, and I was no longer in doubt. 

Back then and today, I deal with the crooked, with stigma, with what breaks the norm for what is considered attractive. I think the harsh moments, where we forget the world is watching, are especially interesting. I try to freeze these moments in my work; to show feelings and sensations in an unfiltered stillness. 

For my paintings, I use oil colors produced by Artifex in Langå, all canvases are made at Vindelev Blindrammefabrik in Tørring. The ceramics are fired, glazed and fired again at Værkstedet Ribe. Mixed media is made with Derwent Inktense watercolor pencils and Posca markers on Hahnemüle watercolor paper.
